About Me
A peanut butter jar became my KPI - a key performance indicator. It was screaming red, a signal for change. I was a nun for 8 years and left for health reasons. My life after the convent was a mess: fragile health, minimal income, lack of focus, distracted, stressed, and burned out. For three months, I ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every meal, every day. I couldn't sustain that diet and that budget.I was on a fast track to poverty.I started reading through my journals - I've been journaling since high school.I slowly began practicing the mindful habits I learned as a nun - mantras, stillness, focused breathing, journaling, and contemplating life as presence and possibility.I decided to pivot my career at midlife with zero corporate experience.I wanted to work for the best - Microsoft. Friends thought my chances were slim to impossible. What I learned as a nun kept me focused and unbreakable in my persistence. It took 44 job applications - 43 were rejections. My first hiring manager gave me a chance despite his own bias against religion.Denise, I almost didn't hire you. When I looked at your resume, it had “Church lady” written all over it, and I immediately threw it to the side. I didn't want anything to do with religious institutions. Yet, I didn't want others to discount me, and I didn't want to do that to you. I knew I had to give you a chance, so I reviewed your resume. I decided to interview you, and afterward, I knew I wanted to hire you. - First Microsoft ManagerThe rest is history – an award-winning career at Microsoft. How I Can Help You35,000 hours of practicing mindfulness as a nun gave me the skills to be calm, present, and unflinching no matter the situation.I want to demystify micro-mindfulness through simple practices that allow you to think clearly, act decisively, and recover fast from burnout.
